Science fair at PAS for the year 2014- 2015
The day of the Science Fair, 4th of February 2015 was buzzing with activity at PAS. The entire student body was involved in this activity from grades 1 to 12. The hallways had displays of the various projects and students were hovering around their boards with a sense of accomplishment. They were waiting in anticipation for the judges to arrive at their station.
Well, it all began at the very commencement of the academic year when students were given instruction regarding the purpose and guidelines of a science fair project. This was followed by students choosing a topic of interest from a wide range of categories and being allotted with supervisors within the faculty of the Science Department as well as from other departments. Students were given short term deadlines to enable them to be on par with the task ahead of them. They also met with their supervisors on a regular basis to get advice and complete all aspects of the project. The best way to learn and understand scientific concepts is “learning by doing”, “gathering evidence” and by actually following the scientific method of inquiry. Some students also conducted extensive research projects.
We had the privilege of having guest judges from the National Tsing Hua University along with PAS faculty. Students were challenged by probing questions from experts in various fields and students were able to answer some of the questions with confidence and for others it was a good learning experience. We also had students from Shanghai visiting during the Science Fair. We were happy to receive positive comments from the visiting school. Students from grades 1 – 5 completely enjoyed doing their projects under the guidance of their teachers and felt immense pride in their work. Middle and High School students, while presenting their projects, they also exhibited some aspects of the “Expected School wide Learning Results” of PAS in a more tangible way.
